Mixing

The SunnyStudio team offers the service Mixing of prerecorded tracks with voices and instruments.

Mixing is quite a complex process which no doubt depends a lot on the knowledge and imagination of the mixing engineer, as well as on some other factors related to the quality of:

  • the arrangement
  • the performance
  • the musical instruments involved and the sound-recording equipment used.

Another factor which should not be underestimated is your knowledge in the area of sound recording.

Often enough (almost always in some of the styles/ genres) tracks have to be edited before the mixing can be launched.

This editing process includes: correcting out of tune or arhythmically performed passages in the performance of a given instrument or vocal, cutting and pasting parts of the instrumental or vocal performance to a different place or removing some of them for good, if necessary; removing pops, clicks, hisses, etc.

If you find it difficult to do this sometimes difficult and time-consuming task, please contact us at: sunny_studioonline@yahoo.com, to discuss your needs and requirements and, based on this discussion, form the price.

The mixing includes:

  • Dynamics Processing – correcting the volume level of each instrument

•Macrodynamics – a change in the volume level for a longer period of time with the help of manual control or fader programme

•Microdynamics – working with instruments’ musical rhythmic expressiveness. To do this we use dynamic processors (compressors, expanders, limiters)

  • Equalisation – working with the frequency spectrum of instruments i.e. changing the volume of particular frequencies of instruments in order to obtain a more natural sound in the respective style of music or to remove irritating frequencies, resonances, etc.

  • With the help of an equalizer to some extent the position of a given instrument in the sound image can be vertically adjusted.

  • Working on the stereo image – positioning each instrument (or effect) from left to right among the speakers with the help of panpots and application of time-based effects such as Delays, Flangers, Choruses, Phase Shifters and Reverbs.

Preparing the files for sending

Our preferred format is WAV file, 32bit /48кHz.
We also accept 24bit, 16bit / 44.1kHz , AIFF, as well as MP3 files.

Note:
Please bear it in mind that if MP3 files are used you are compromising with the quality of the sound!

To prepare your files for sending you need to do the following:

1. Remove all unwanted noises and tracks.

Try to prepare the mix with as few as possible tracks (instruments) unless you intend to include a symphony orchestra. Please bear in mind that a lot does not necessarily mean better! If you fail to observe this rule your mix might sound too crowded and the individual instruments will be difficult to hear.

2. Each individual instrument in the project should be consolidated or merged into continuous track (all separately recorded parts of the instrument should be saved in one common file) and saved under a file name bearing the name of the instrument such as “solo guitar”, “solo vocal”, “piano”.

3. It is extremely important that all tracks start from the same place (with a common TrackMarker). This is required so that we can align them in our work station using the sequence in which tracks were ordered with you.

4. Remove all plug-ins from the tracks. If you simply must have a particular effect you happen to like very much, record this effect as a separate track and call it for example “Rhythm Guitar Effect”.

5. Do not use normalization or any effects to raise the level of tracks.

6. Leave all files in the original Bit depth and Sample Rate. If you recorded at 24bit/48kHz, send them as 24bit/48kHz. If you recorded at 16bit/44.1kHz, send them as 16bit/44.1kHz.

In order to give as a feel of what you want your mix to sound like please send us, together with the tracks, an existing popular song in identical or similar style, as well as a rough mix of your song (if you have one).

After we do the mixing for you, we will send you the mixed songs. Should you have any comments or criticisms, please write to us. We will reflect your requirements and will send a revised version.

In case you are still not entirely happy with the mixing, please contact us.

After the final mixing the final versions of the mixes will be send to you in Wav 48Hz /32bit format, ready for mastering.
If you wish so we can send them also in the following formats: 24bit, 16bit / 44.1kHz , AIFF or an MP3 format.

Note:
Please bear it in mind that if MP3 files are used you are compromising with the quality of the sound
